From a business and marketing point of view, websites are virtual real estate that needs to be monetized.

Offline – in the “real” world – the value of real estate depends very much on location, location and location.

Yes, that’s 3 times the same factor, but because it’s the most important one, Real Estate Brokers and Developers tell it 3 times like that, when asked what makes the value of a flat, a house or a site.

Certainly the value of virtual real estate is not depending on its “location”.

What are the essentials to monetize a website then?

If you think of websites like virtual market stalls, we can simply say that to monetize them you need

  • an offer or something of interest to others: that could be a product you sell,  a service you offer, info on a special topic, a solution for a problem etc.
  • make people take notice of your offer
  • make people accept your offer and take the action you want them to. Like for instance call a phone number, click on an ad or buy whatever you sell.

Sounds simple, but everybody trying to monetize his website or trying to sell online knows that “profit” is easier said than made …*-).

Because first you have to craft your offer, which amongst others involves research and creativity and a lot of techie stuff to get it online.

Next you have to make your offer known or noticed.

You might advertise, send mails to your list or safelists, and use all sorts of tricks and techniques to attract visitors to your site.

But hey, not just any visitors. Nope. Because you need the right ones. Visitors that very likely will be interested in your offer.

These kind of visitor are referred to as “targeted traffic” in Internet Marketing jargon.

Basically you have to make the right offer to the right people.

And what if your offer isn’t attractive enough? If it is not crafted or presented in the right way to make your visitors take you up on it? If it don’t “converts” your visitors into buyers?

The most wanted species in Internet Marketing (right people) … lol

And a “buyer” is in a special psychological situation, a special state of mind.
